Serionix is commercializing our Colorfil(TM) technology for removal of toxic gases and odors from air; Colorfil has greater efficiency and capacity for target gases than competitive products, and features a vibrant color change to indicate when it is time for the filter to be replaced. During the course of our Phase II project, Serionix successfully launched a commercial filtration product based on the same core Colorfil(TM) coating technology used in the project. Phase II-E represents an opportunity to fund dual-purpose (NASA/non-NASA) technical development in areas of ammonia, formaldehyde, and carbon dioxide sorption. Specifically we propose an additional effort to: 1) improve environmental stability and HSE-compatability of our formaldehyde-removal technology; 2) increase the physical durability or robustness of our Colorfil(TM) AM ammonia-removal material; and, 3) demonstrate vacuum regeneration of our related CO2-sorptive media. Intent and expected outcomes include development of commercial product via: a) robust made-in-America production and supply including domestic production partnerships and Illinois-based prototyping capability; b) improved performance and environmental durability of technology; c) substantial economic impact via growth of our staff and expansion of our marketing effort; d) use of new facilities and capabilities to explore new products for NASA and the commercial market. Thus the project is also expected to make products of serial-production quality available to NASA in place of custom/one-of-a-kind hardware.
Ammonia, formaldehyde and CO2 pose a great risk to the health of astronauts and integrity of equipment aboard the ISS and Crew Exploration Vehicle. Serionix media may be utilized in odor mitigation and chemical adsorption, to improve health, safety, and comfort via contaminant control within the spacesuit, EVA equipment, the ISS and next generation spacecrafts. Serionix technology could be also of great value to broader NASA missions.
Beyond NASA applications, Serionix is commercializing this disruptive, color-changing filter technology across a range of markets including semiconductor cleanroom, residential HVAC, air purifier and automotive applications. Serionix will continue building a strong technology-backed brand via select partnerships while directly addressing consumers with intuitive, high-performance filters.
