Space Infrastructure Dexterous Robot

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2019-05-01

End Date: 2020-01-31

Description:

In-space assembly demonstration using a lightweight robotic arm, called SPIDER (Space Infrastructure Dexterous Robot) that will be integrated into NASA's Restore-L.

Benefits:

Technologies developed through SPIDER \ will enable spacecraft components to be robotically assembled and reconfigured while on orbit. The demonstration will mature space technologies with cross-cutting capplications, including: enabling new architectures and capabilities for a wide range of government and commercial missions; enabling in-space construction of large comunications antennae and telescopes; enabling assembly and manufacturing of structures beyond the volume limits imposed by rockets; replacing some astronaut extravehicular activity tasks with precision robotics and introduce the potential for longer mission durations enabled by planned or unplanned maintenance.
