Structural Health Monitoring of Flight Structures, Year 1

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2011-01-01

End Date: 2011-09-30

Description: This Structural Health Monitoring of Flight Structures technology project seeks to utilize acoustic emission techniques in combination with fiber optic strain sensing to detect, assess and track damage in composite flight structures. The goal of the Structural Health Monitoring of Flight Structures technology project is to support real-time assessment of damage to flight structures and insure safety of flight. This will be done by developing innovative structural health monitoring techniques for quantitative damage assessment of composite flight structures. Acoustic emission techniques in combination with fiber optic strain sensing will be used to detect, assess and track damage in composite flight structures.
Benefits: Provides structural health monitoring capabilities for missions requiring space flight and EDL
