CELSIUS is an innovative layered system that combines functions of Multi‐Layer Insulation (MLI), Micro‐Meteoroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD) protection, and fairing functions (exposure to free stream) into a deterministic soft‐goods system that provides far greater performance for far less mass than equivalent state‐of‐the‐art (SOA) systems performing the same functions. This demonstration mission consisted of a wind tunnel test and two rocket sled tests; the test article was integrated with a launch vehicle, launched, and deployed when pressure and velocities were similar to the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) deployment environment. CELSIUS was successfully able to demonstrate their method of Insulating cryogenic propellant storage tanks to reduce the amount of boiloff and keep it cold in the space environment.
CELSIUS is a system that can be installed on the surface of the cryogenic upper stage tank of a space launch vehicle to provide enhanced insulation capabilities and protection from meteoroids and debris.
