Cryogenic (H2/O2) Smart Propulsion Flight Demonstration

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2021-05-31

End Date: 2025-12-31

Description:

Demonstrate a smart propulsion cryogenic system, using liquid oxygen and hydrogen, on a Vulcan Centaur upper stage. Test precise tank pressure control, tank to tank propellant transfer, and multi-week propellant storage (i.e., passive thermal control).

Benefits:

Benefits include 20% increase in Vulcan Centaur launch performance, extending Centaur mission duration from hours to months and enhanced confidence in Dynetics cryogenic lunar lander benefiting USG missions, including HLS and commercial payloads. Reduces hardware and commodities, increasing lift capability, reduces wasted propellants, maximizing performance, and enables longer duration missions for future customer needs.
