BioLEAD: BioLogical Exploration via Autonomous Detection

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2020-10-01

End Date: 2021-09-30

Description:

We have developed a miniaturized dielectric sensing prototype by leveraging an in situ materials characterization platform developed by the Stanford XLab team and using commercially available components (FY20 CIF award). We have also performed preliminary testing to characterize the sensor. Our first objective is to complete the development and characterization of the prototype and to build a full-scale multi-well sensing unit to study multiple conditions in parallel, including biological experiments. Our second objective is to study the response to low- energy ionizing radiation (gamma rays) in budding yeast using the dielectric sensor. The data will be corroborated with traditional lab approaches.

Benefits: Complete development and characterization of miniaturized dielectric sensor prototype. Utilize developed prototype to study space-relevant radiation effects on biological systems
