Development of Inkjet Printed Thin-Film Patterned Batteries

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2021-10-01

End Date: 2022-09-30

Description:

In this study, we propose to develop ultra-thin components for next generation batteries using an inkjet printing technique. The team has extensive experience working with these materials and performing electrochemical characterization. We intend to fabricate non-flammable, ultra-thin, and patterned components using a rapid printing technique, and quantify their power and energy benefits compared to traditional planar components.

Benefits:

Current NASA missions rely on flammable lithium-ion batteries for mobile power. This project will provide lighterweight and thinner components, offering improvements in energy and power all while utilizing a nonflammable electrolyte which eliminates the chance of catastrophic failure.
