Text-to-Spaceship: Revolutionizing Mission Development through AI and Evolved Systems

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2024-10-01

End Date: 2025-09-30

Description:

This proposal aims to revolutionize NASA Goddard's mission development by infusing AI and computational design to accelerate development cycles and realize game-changing performance improvements. It will establish a comprehensive Text-to-Spaceship framework for integrating AI into all aspects of mission development, facilitating the transition to AI-enabled automation with human collaboration. Evolved Systems, a key component of the Text-to-Spaceship framework, will automate the design of complex multidisciplinary assemblies—such as trusses, optomechanical systems, and electronics boxes—based on input requirements, extending the paradigm established by Evolved Structures. Evolved Systems will be built and tested for mission applications in Earth Science, Planetary, and Astrophysics. Additionally, the proposal will research, disseminate, and implement a wide variety of AI and Digital Engineering technologies in collaboration with government, academic, and industry leaders, with the goals of accelerating mission development, reducing costs, improving performance, and extending Goddard's lead in applying AI to engineering.

Benefits:

The anticipated benefits of this proposal include significantly accelerated mission development cycles and substantial performance improvements through the integration of AI and computational design. By automating the design of complex multidisciplinary assemblies, the Text-to-Spaceship framework will reduce development costs and improve design efficiency across missions from Earth Science, Planetary, and Astrophysics. The collaboration with industry and academic leaders will also position NASA Goddard as a leader in applying AI to engineering, further advancing the capabilities of mission development and enhancing performance outcomes.
