Who Let the Gas Out?: NASA Tank Venting in Microgravity Challenge

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2023-08-24

End Date: 2024-05-08

Description: Tank venting in space is historically rare but will be required for future missions, especially long duration missions to the moon or mars. To enable a liquid fluid (non-cryogenic) transfer in space, a means to vent a tank in micro-gravity without ingestion of liquid is required. The goal of this effort is to develop a novel solution to vent a tank gas/vapor mixture without liquid ingestion into the vent that could be retrofitted into a propellant tank design prior to its final welding together or possibly be external to a tank.
Solving this challenge would enable the use of the tank ullage vent process prior to or after the liquid transfer to adjust the receiving tank pressure with minimal liquid expulsion during vent process or during the liquid transfer to vary to the pressure
