Fault Management Analysis Tool For Model Centric Systems Engineering

Status: Completed

Start Date: 2024-05-21

End Date: 2024-11-20

Description: This proposal responds to the need for new technologies to effectively manage and streamline complex fault management (FM) systems, enable rapid diagnostic model generation and validation, and provide tools to perform FM analyses and trades e.g., fault containment regions (FCRs), FM model validation, sensor placement, and telemetry review for ground operations. During Phase II-E, Okean Solutions proposes to tighten and enhance the integration of their model-based fault management tool/system, called MONSID®, with JPL’s Computer Aided Engineering for Systems Architecture (CAESAR) platform. MONSID-CAESAR interoperability will be improved by enabling model translation from MONSID to CAESAR. The combined capability will advance the practice of FM to ultimately decrease manually intensive and error-prone tasks and schedule costs while ensuring FM system robustness and appropriateness. The enhanced adapter will be applied to a MONSID model of the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) spacecraft. The main application is FM analyses as well as design and software development. Phase II-E lays the foundation for additional uses in Integration and Test (I&T) and operational phases to update onboard FM models and in support of recovery operations. By integrating with CAESAR, Okean Solutions sees unique opportunities to increase visibility and the number of users of the MONSID toolset as well as to provide more functionality for CAESAR.
Benefits: A MONSID adapter for CAESAR can support FM development in current and future programs, providing rapid model development, improving HW/SW trade accuracy and efficiency for FM design analyses. MONSID tools applied to ground operations will assist human operators by reducing FM analysis time. The technology is applicable to a broad range of NASA near-Earth to interplanetary, risk-averse, and experimental missions including SMAP, PACE, Europa Clipper, Mars Sample Retrieval Lander, Psyche, and CubeSats (INSPIRE, SunRISE, CAPSTONE).

MONSID tools are model-based and application agnostic and thus applicable to a wide variety of DoD, ESA, JAXA and commercial programs. This innovation can be adapted to other modeling environments to streamline and accelerate FM design and development practices. The MONSID tool suite can be applied to ground operations in other commercial industries including aerospace, automotive, and chemical.
